covid19 Thai art project

I'm Roberto, an illustrator, from Brazil, living in Brisbane and selling some special art pieces for a cause close to my heart.

Thailand is a second home for my partner Vickie and I, having lived there to train and compete in our sport, Muay Thai. We fell in love with the people, the food, the way of life, and made some wonderful friends too.

It broke our hearts when we read that the suicide rate has skyrocketed in the past weeks, and that people are literally starving, with practically zero help from the government.

So we quickly rallied together with 3 of our good friends in Thailand (Mary, Frances and Sandy), and using my art skills, and their networks, we're now able to give directly to people who need help now. (You can read about each of us at the bottom of this page).

"I've created affordable artwork inspired by the beautiful people of Thailand, to contribute to those most vulnerable in these difficult times."

Product Details

As a Muay Thai fighter, my time in Thailand has been such an incredible part of my life, both for my sport and for my connection to the most amazing people you could imagine.

Though we've never met, I follow the Instagram page of Wor Watthana, a Muay thai gym in the Issan region, and I love seeing how they truly support their young athletes. Muay Thai is a way out of poverty and unstable home environments for many kids, and Wor Watthana really offer a home, with love and support, as well as exceptional physical and mental training for these young athletes.
This photo of Nungning is so perfect, and is just such a strong image that depicts how incredibly unique the childhood of these kids is....training at a gym to be fighters, learning responsibilities through chores, going to school, and playing together in the local farm-land area.
About Nungning

Nungning was abandoned at birth and doesn't even know who her parents are. She was taken in at just a few days old by a transgendered woman*. For Nungning, the gym has become a second home offering everything from a hot meal, help with her homework, to a safe place to just come and have fun. She now has both a father figure in her life, and female interaction.

Some articles about the situation in Thailand

Suicide Rate Spikes

As a coronavirus lockdown devastates Thailand's economy, more people are taking their own lives.

Little to No Support

Millions of Thais left out of government's Covid-19 cash relief scheme.

Inequality Worsened

Many Thais were already economically marginalised before the outbreak. Without urgent action, they will fall deeper into poverty.
